"On the night of September 25 to September 26, 1943, Turgel, as part of an advanced detachment, crossed the Dnieper in the vicinity of Voiskovoe village of the Solonyansky district of the Dnepropetrovsk region of the Ukrainian SSR. At a critical moment of the battle, he replaced the acting commander of the detachment and within a day and a half repelled the fierce German counterattacks, lasting until the crossing of the main forces. In those battles, Turgel was shell-shocked, but continued to fight."
