"1st Starshina Wilkov was part of the landing force to liberate the North Kuril Islands from the Japanese invaders on August 18, 1945. The enemy counterattack was repulsed and 8 Japanese tanks were destroyed. But when the marines stormed height 171, they came under fire from a double machine gun bunker and some were mowed down. Then Vilkov crawled to the bunker and throwed a grenade at it. When the marines once again rose to attack, the enemy machine guns fired again. Vilkov rose to his full height and closed the right firing embrasure with his body. Sailor Ilichev closed the left embrasure with his body."
