Biography

German SS functionary during the Nazi era and a Holocaust perpetrator. He commanded Sonderkommando 1a of Einsatzgruppe A, as well as the Sicherheitspolizei and SD in Estonia. Sandberger perpetrated mass murder of the Jews in the Baltic states. He was also responsible for the arrest of Jews in Italy, and their deportation to Auschwitz concentration camp. Sandberger was the second-highest official of the Einsatzgruppe A to be tried and convicted.

25.05.1945: surrendered to HQ US 42 Div in Kitzbühel, Austria
15.06.1945: transferred to 307 Det CIC at HQ US 7 Army
08.07.1945: transferred to USFET (US Forces European Theater) Interrogation Center and then to Camp 020 - British Interrogation Centre - probably located at Diest, Belgium
09.1947: sentenced to death by hanging
1951: sentence commuted to life imprisonment
09.01.1958: released from Landsberg prison
