"A dwelling house was completely demolished by a H.E. bomb and three persons were buried under the debris. Constable Starkey climbed up the pile of bricks and after tunnelling a passage with his hands climbed through it, head first. He was joined by Special Constable Jones and both men worked strenuously for two hours, passing bricks and burning timber up to others who were at the top of the cavity. When Constable Starkey had succeeded in uncovering the buried people a rope was lowered to him and a woman and two men were passed to safety."
