"During the enemy air attacks on Manchester Sergeant Whyte has been conspicuous for his gallant behaviour. On one occasion he helped to operate jets inside a warehouse until it became necessary, owing to the intense heat, to withdraw all personnel from the building. Whyte then climbed with his jets to the roof of an adjacent building and from there tackled the fire."
