He has distinguished himself by courageous coonduct against the enemy in the early morning of May 10, 1940 as member of a small detachment of Veergroep 2C which, as a result of the sudden attack by hostile paratroops, was ordered to defend the immediate vicinity of the port of Moerdijk in order to cover the retreat of this Veergroep to Willemsdorp, notwithstanding heavy close range enemy fire, holding out until he was killed eventually.
