He has distinguished himself in combat against the enemy in the early morning of May 11, 1940, as commander of casemate 37 on the Defensiekanaal in the Peel-Raam position near Mill, although the terrain forward of the casemate had not yet been cleared sufficiently and knowing that the enemy was able to assemble troops and material through a forest in close vicinity to the casemate unseen, holding out to the end, even when the company had retreated in the early evening of May 10 until the enemy managed to destroy the entire casemate with anti-tank guns, killing all those inside.
