- Unit:
- 3e Compagnie, 1e Bataljon, 6e Infanterie Regiment, Wapen der Infanterie
- Awarded on:
- December 14th, 1949
Recommendation:
He has distinguished himself by courageous conduct in the face of the enemy in the early morning of May 11, 1940, as crewmember of casemate 37 on the Defensiekanaal (defense channell) of the Peel-Raamstelling (position) near Mill in North Brabant. The forward area of the casemate had not yet been cleared sufficiently so he knew the enemy was able to assemble troops and material in very close proximity to the casemate through a forest without being seen. Notwithstanding this, the commander and the other three crewmembers managed to hold out and continue the resistances even after the company had been pulled back in the late evening of May 10 until the enemy succeeded in destroying the entire casemate by anti-tank fire, killing all those inside.
