After the Japanese had occupied the village of Tarempa (Riouw) in January 1942 and its commander, a 1st lieutenant of the Reserve, had decided to resort to guerilla warfare, Sergeant Janssen joined him. Fighting did not materialize however as the enemy had left the island after a short stay and subsequently law and order was being maintained on the islands of Groot and Zuid Natuns and Midai.
This was done in extremely trying circumstances as the population was frequently stirred up by the Japanese on the island of Borneo and most soldiers defected until eventually 4 soldiers and a prisoner remained. In the early morning of August 20, 1942, their bivouac was fired on by a number of deserters who had hidden themselves in the nearby forest. Sgt Janssen was mortally injured in the process and died that very day.
