Received the Knight's Cross for successful defensive actions on the 03.02.1944. On this day, despite suffering head and shoulder wounds and having his unit isolated, he and his Zug successfully defended against a number of Soviet assaults for 12 hours before being relieved. By doing so he and his men were able to prevent a collapse of the frontline in his sector, and they even captured a number of Soviet prisoners.
