"He distinguished himself in courageous action against the enemy as commander of a company Grenadiers on May 10 1940, which was designated to retake the airfield Ypenbrug that was largely occupied by the enemy, after he boldly joined one of his sections under enemy fire and encouraged each to advance in order to be able to retake the airfield. In particular in doing so he advanced in a calmly and exemplary manner, leading some of the volunteers of this section between the burning buildings to go to the edge of the airport until, shortly thereafter, he was mortally struck ".
