Recommendation:
He has distinguished himself by performing exceptionally acts of courage and tact in combat against the enemy in the morning of May 10, 1940, as commander of a detachment Mijnversperring (an obstacle with mines) of the 2nd Torpedo Squadron on the River Rhine near Pannerden, after the enemy had already advanced beyond his position, he thwarted traffic on the river by sinking some vessels. Subsequently he launched an attack with his full detachment, conducting himself in a fearless manner. Finally he was seriously injured by heavy fire from advancing enemy armor during the defense of a barricade near the Vriezebrug and shortly afterwards, after having handed over command of his detachment, he succumbed to his injuries.
