The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Renner received the Knight’s Cross…
“On the 20.06.1940 Oberleutnant Renner and his Kompanie were dispatched to conduct a coup-de-main against Fort Parmont (located in the fortified city of Remiremont). He executed this mission successfully, demonstrating exemplary boldness and leadership qualities in the process. By doing this he enabled the capture of the all-important Remiremont square. Oberleutnant Renner had already been awarded the Iron Cross First Class in the Polish Campaign.”
