"2/Lt. Newland was an officer commanding the Pl holding the main road bridge at Kampar on 2nd and 3rd Jan 42. During this period 2/Lt. Newland's position was 3 or 4 times isolated by infiltration between his forward defended localities and the forward defended locality on his right, which was in fact twice overrun. On each occasion when the situation had been restored by counter-attacks by local reserves and by the 2/9 Jats, 2/Lt. Newland was found to be hanging on in his position with a few men despite intense mortar and MG fire. The position commanding the bridge held by this Pl was perforce very exposed and it required a high degree of courage to stay there in the face of the enemy concentration of fire.
His fine example of devotion to duty and the personal disregard for danger of this officer were beyond all praise and it is not too much to say that it was largely due to him that the Kampar position was held."
