Biography

Elisabeth Abegg received her education at the university of Leipzig and moved to Berlin in 1918. Her she started teaching at the Luisengymnasium and in 1924 became an active member of the Deutsche Demokratische Partei. She openly critisized Adolf Hitler when he came to power and was questioned by the Gestapo in 1938. As from 1941 she started helping Jews to hide and leave Germany to Switserland. Between 1942 and 1945 she at least helped 80 Jews to escape. After the Second World War she became a member of the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands.
