On the 21.12.1943 the Soviets launched a tank/infantry attack against the positions of the 32. Infanterie-Division following a 45 minute artillery barrage. However the attack was crushed, with Soviet losses of 11 tanks destroyed. Of these, Obergefreiter Wiegand personally destroyed 7 with his 7.5 cm Pak gun, and thus played a major role in stopping the attempted Soviet breakthrough. He was awarded the Knight's Cross for this action.
