Helmut Blechschmidt was as Obergefreiter a member of the Fallschirm Nachrichten-Abteilung 7, 7. Fallschirm-Jäger-Division of which most of the members were transported with Junkers Ju 52/3m to the Netherlands on May 10th, 1940. One of the aircraft was destroyed during the landing by Dutch artillery fire. After landing the unit stationed at Rijsoord.
Helmut Blechschmidt is one of four military from the unit that were killed in action, either on board of the destroyed Junkers at Waalhaven Airport, at Rijsoord of at Tweede Tol.
