Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Temporary Major
Unit:
128th Highland Field Regiment, 51st (Highland) Infantry Division, British Army
Awarded on:
March 18th, 1943
Recommendation:
"Major Field commanded a battery in the advanced guard during the advance on MISURATA. He showed great courage and handled his battery with determination and great dash. In three engagements he personally controlled the fire of his gun from an armoured car under heavy and accurate shell fire. In particular on the evening of the 17th January the leading squadron of tnaks was being objected to very heavy shelling and was held up. Major Field placed himself in front of the ranks in order to obtain the necessary observation and, in spite of very intense shelling, secured in silencing two enemy batteries and forced the enemy to retreat in great haste. His action was an inspiration to all who saw it."
Military Cross (MC)

Rank:
Temporary Major
Unit:
128th Highland Field Regiment, 51st (Highland) Infantry Division, British Army
Awarded on:
August 31st, 1944
Military Cross (MC)
Recommendation:
"On 23 Jun 44, Major Field was commanding the Bty providing FOO's for the attack by 5 Cameron Highlanders on ST HONORINE LA CHARDONNERETTE.
He was also acting as CRA's representative with the Bn Comd.
During the course of the action Major Field was under heavy and accurate shell and mortar fire for a period of some eight hours, which included a strong counterattack by enemy tanks, SP guns and infantry. During this time he displayed great gallantry and with the utmost coolness continued to send extremely valuable and accurate calls for fire and situation reports. At one time when the Bn Comd was temporarilly incapacitated, Major FIELD took effective control of the situation until the arrival of an infantry officer to relieve the Bn Comd.
As a result of his initiative and unruffled direction of the fire of the supporting artillery, its fire was brought down in areas where it was extremely effective in breaking up hostle troop and tank concentrations. There is little doubt that the succesful repulse of the enemy counter-attack was largely due to Major FIELD's very capable and courageous handling of his extremely responsible position."
