During the defensive battles around Kiev in November 1943, Obergefreiter Schill especially distinguished himself. When the Soviets launched a tank/infantry assault with the aim of penetrating into the sector of the III./Grenadier-Regiment 107, Schill succeeded in smashing a number of Soviet thrusts and thereby brought the hostile attack to a halt. For stopping this Soviet assault, would could have had grave consequences for the whole Division, Schill received the Knight’s Cross.
