Biography

John was son of Armstrong and Ellen Jane McCullough, from Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. He served with the RNZAF, 75 Squadron RAF.

John died on Wednesday 3 February 1943 at the age of 30 yrs due to a crash with the Short Stirling BK604 AA-S. His aircraft was attacked by a German night fighter on a mission to Hamburg and crashed near Enter.

John is burried at the Oude Algemene Begraafplaats in Wierden. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. On the Goorseweg in Enter, a moment recalls the crash of the plane and its crew.

Citation
Throughout his operational career Pilot Officer McCullough has participated in many raids over
enemy territory. He is a keen and determined captain of aircraft, who invariably presses home his attacks with the utmost vigour. The great courage which he habitually displays, sets an excellent
example to all ranks in his squadron. His determination and devotion to duty are most
praiseworthy.
