Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Obergefreiter (Corporal)
Unit:
Gruppenführer 3./Grenadier-Regiment 24
Awarded on:
September 5th, 1944
On the 29.07.1944, at the border between Russia, Estonia and Latvia, the 21. Infanterie-Division was engaged in fierce defensive battles against the attacking Soviet forces. Among the defenders was a small Kampfgruppe led by Obergefreiter Moser. In the course of its defense against multiple Soviet attacks with tank support, it was eventually forced to fall back due to the overwhelming pressure. However on his own initiative Moser and his men moved forward again during the evening and recaptured the village of Kudupe (which had been lost earlier in the day) in bitter close combat that saw Moser becoming wounded for the fifth time in the war.

For his bravery and initiative shown in the recapture of Kudupe (which was of great significance for ensuring the security of his comrades’ renewed withdrawal movements) Moser would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
