Oswald "Billy" Mountford was based at RAF Thorney Island during The Second World War. In the early hours of Sunday 4th February 1945 he was returning from a raid in mainland Europe, with Pilot Officer Edward George "Ted" Wicky. While attempting to land in poor weather conditions at RAF Thorney Island, the De Havilland Mosquito crashed in the village of Horndean, Hampshire. Both airmen were killed. Oswald "Billy" Mountford is commemorated at Chelmsford Place War Memorial, Leeton, New South Wales, Australia.
