On the 09.02.1945, in the area around Kreuzburg (south of Königsberg), Krappmann defended against a Soviet armoured attack with his lone 8.8 cm Flak gun. Within a few hours he destroyed 11 T-34 tanks and prevented a decisive Soviet breakthrough. For this action he would be subsequently decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
