Gustav Suhr fought in the 22nd Battalion NZEF during the Second World war. He was het half-brother to SS officer Friederich Suhr and German Heer officer Rudolf Suhr. At one point, both Rudolf and Gustav were fighting in Greece in opposite sides. He was evacuated from Crete in 1941 and eventually repatriated home to New Zealand .

His father was Gustav George Nicholas Metoo Suhr, who was last known to be living in New Plymouth NZ but then vanished overseas after internment during the First World War.
