Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Temporary Major
Unit:
Royal Regiment of Artillery
Awarded on:
August 24th, 1944
Recommendation:
"This officer has shown considerable industry and initiative in dealing with tasks beyond the normal resources of his camp. In Sicily he had to receive and house on a semi-permanent basis up to 6,000 prisoners with a camp designed to provide transit facilities for only 2,000. In Taranto personnel arrived unexpectedly for about a month in numbers far in excess of the capacity of the transit camps to deal with them. In addition to the normal work of his prisoner of war camp, which was running, Major Jones was given the task of improvising out of his own resources four transit camps to house 4,500. Although there were very few ordnance stores available, Major Jones dealt with the matter cheerfully and efficiently, and it was mainly owing to his ability and successful improvisation that the large numbers involved were housed, fed and despatched to their destinations. He has always shown himself willing to tackle any task with the minimum of help and notice, and his resourcefulness has invariably beeb of considerable assistance."
Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE)
Awarded on:
January 30th, 1948
Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct (Army)
