During the opening stages of Case Blue, the 57. Infanterie-Division was tasked with overcoming well-prepared Soviet positions near Prokhorovka. Here Oberleutnant Hoffmann would particularly distinguish himself. As the attack threatened to stall, he made the decision to take his Sturmgeschütze forward in order to get the attack moving again. His gamble paid off and the Germans were able to break through, largely on account of Hoffmann’s actions. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross in recognition.
