On December 16, 1943, the maquis of the Ain region participated in the sabotage of the power plant of the Schneider factories in Le Creusot, by providing three detachments. One is commanded by Lieutenant Bourret aka 'Brun' ('Brown'). The charges of explosives are set and explode. On the way back from Montchanin, 'Brun' and four of his men were stopped by a roadblock and disarmed.
"Brown" throwed himself at the head of a German officer to whom he shot a punch. Gunshots ensued, two of his teammates managed to escape but he was fatally injured by two bullets in the stomach. While he shouts "Vive la France - Vive de Gaulle" and he begins to sing the 'Marseillaise', the Germans went after him with the sticks to make him shut up. Transported to the courtyard of the Montchanin girls' school, his body was exposed overnight. The German authorities' statement stated that he was a Spanish terrorist.
Bourret was named "Brown" in the French Resistance because of his ebony hair and his coppery complexion. Despite the risks, the entire population of Montchanin attended his funeral.
After the war, his body was buried in Val d'Enfer in Cerdon.
