"Gnr Jung is a Dutch subject and has served with this Regt and the 9th Bn The Essex Regiment, from which it was formed, as a volunteer since 26 JUL 40.
He is a RT and line signaller, with a quiet, confident and extremely efficient manner, ready in any emergency to assume much greater responsibility than is normally allotted to one of his rank. He landed in NORMANDY on "D" Day with assault troops and has rendered outstanding service throughout the campaign.
On 1 NOV 44 during operations on the SCHELDT to clear the enemy from WALCHEREN and open the port of ANTWERP, Gnr Jung was a member of the RA representative party with 4th Commando in the assault across the SCHELDT to FLUSHING. Their landing craft came under heavy fire from enemy shore defences and was hit. The stoker was killed and the craft, out of control, struck an under water obstruction, was holed and sunk in three feet of water. Gnr Jung showed great devotion to duty and complete disregard for his own personal safety in return in time and gain under heavy fire to the craft to recover wireless equipment and stores without which it was impossible to continue the fire of 15 Regiments of Royal Artillery which were in support of the assault. Gnr Jung next and still under fire and with great courage established and his training as a medical orderly was invaluable when two members of the party were wounded. The official narrative added the following:
The fire plan was equal to every occasion and calls for fire were answered immediately. The RA representatives No. 22 set, although immersed when the LCA on which it was carried sank, was operating 15 minutes after being brought ashore.
After the success of the initial assault Gnr JUng by his untiring effort was of the greatest use both to the RM Commando and 155 Bde 52(L) Div. His knowledge of his native language and some German enabled information of his tactical importance to be extracted from civilians and German prisoners more quickly than otherwise could have been possible and passed back for action.
Gnr Jung's courage example and unbounded enthusiasm on this and other operations concerned in the liberation of his own country have been of the highest order and an inspiration to those with whom he served."
