On the night of the 15./16.03.1944 the 4th Indian Division captured Hill 193, located north of Cassino. In response the I./Fallschirm-Jäger-Regiment 4 under the command of Hauptmann Beyer launched an attack against this location on the morning of the 19.03.1944. Although they were not able to retake the hill itself they did manage to strike into the midst of 3 battalions of the 5th Indian Brigade and disperse them. By doing so they prevented these battalions from linking up with the Gurkhas on Hill 435 and then moving on to capture the Cassino monastery itself from there. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross in recognition of this feat.
