"W HOPMAN RA entered AIYON near PATRAS, GREECE with 3/12 EFR early in January 1945. Whilst there he undertook duties in connection with the distribution of ML supplies. He remained in this capacity when British Forces were withdrawn from the town, and was there for almost two months. Although with no training in civil Administration, during this time by his own ability, initiative and vigorous action he succeeded very largely in restoring the community to normal working life. He not only saw to the equitable distribution of ML food and clothing, but also controlled food prices and local authority, ** succeeded in helping to restart local industries and services.
When he left he was able to hand over AIYON to the ML authorities in a very much better condition of work, ** and peaceful living then would have been possible without his extremely energetic and able administration.
He was respected and very much liked by the people of AIYON, and when he left the Mayor presented him with a written appreciation of his effort on behalf of the town."
