"He commanded a platoon of sappers during the night 11/12 May 1944 in the attack on PHANTOM RIDGE. In this action he displayed great skill and valour and seized two heavily armed and grimly defended enemy bunkers. He then dressed a badly wounded officer from the 15 Inf bn with complete disregard to his own safety. Later during the attack on a third bunker he was himself wounded but refused to leave the battlefield to be evacuated, until ordered to do so by the Bn Comd."
