"On 17th April 1945 in the fighting along the Gaiana Canal, Private Stankiewicz was the driver of a carrier of a Recce platoon which was the first to cross the Canal. Despite a wound in his hand he continued to drive his vehicle and rescued a signals patrol. By his courage and dash he contributed in no small way to the crossing of the Gaiana and the establishment of a bridgehead on the far bank".
