On the 08.03.1942 the 13. Panzer-Division was locked in fierce defensive combat with attacking Soviet forces. Among the defending German units was the 5./Schützen-Regiment 93, which was tasked with holding a key position within the Mius bridgehead known to the Germans as the “Limekiln”. On this day the Kompanie lost control of this position, and its commander (Oberleutnant Graf Yorck) became a casualty due to a headshot. However Leutnant Voß took his place and proceeded to launch a determined and successful counterattack that managed to recapture this key position. Voß would later receive the Knight’s Cross for this action.
