During the middle of August 1942 Oberleutnant Ivers defended a commanding hill south of Lake Ilmen with his infantry. During this time the numerically superior Soviet forces penetrated into the line of the defenders after days of fierce offensive action, however Ivers launched a flanking counterthrust with his reserves that threw the attackers back. He would later receive the Knight’s Cross for this action.
