"During the whole of the Italian campaign, Lieutenant Winnicki participated in all engagements displaying great initiative and courage, on 10th April 1945, along the Senio River he was employed as a Forward Observation Officer.

He worked under very difficult conditions, under continuous enemy artillery and machine gun fire, the bad visibility often forced him to change his Observation Posts under enemy fire.

He fulfilled his tasks outstandingly well, successfully directed the fire of his Regiment, silencing the enemy mortar and machine guns, there by allowing the infantry to advance.

An enemy counter attack which was launched was broken up by fire of his Regiment and by the fire he called for from Artillery Group Polish Artillery.

His calmness, determination and fearlessness were an example to his Observation Post personnel, which carried on its work without regard for danger".
