During the Second Battle of Courland the Soviets bombarded the positions of Grenadier-Regiment 4 for 80 minutes before attacking it with several divisions. The resultant combat was particularly fierce around a commanding hill. This was a particularly valuable objective for the Soviets, as from here they could roll up the 31. Infanterie-Division’s entire sector. Eventually they seized the hill, however Hauptmann Kamischke was quick to recognize the danger that could ensure. He thus assembled the regimental reserve and launched an immediate counterattack that succeeded in retaking the hill after a challenging fight.
Hauptmann Kamischke would continue to distinguish himself in the subsequent combat. The Soviets once again managed to penetrate into the German positions, however Hauptmann Kamischke managed to restore the situation at the head of his Bataillon. A further Soviet attack against the Bataillon sector was likewise repulsed.
Hauptmann Kamischke was consequently awarded the Knight’s Cross for his achievements during the Second Battle of Courland.
