"During the action leading up to the battle for the Metauro River, Captain Karpiński led his squadron with courage and ability. On the 9th August 1944 he distinguished himself by gallantly carrying out a successful attack against Hill 182, in which he led his Squadron personally, which captured a number of the enemy, ten of their Spandau machine guns, and destroyed two anti-tank guns. This action contributed very materially in ensuring the success of the operation as a whole, and its result was due very largely to Captain Karpiński's courageous leadership and fine example to his men."
