Biography

Lieutenant Commander of the 1st Class Royal Navy

Jongelie was dropped over the Netherlands as a paratrooper in September 1942 on an assignment from the Secret Service. Shortly afterwards it fell into the hands of the occupiers.
Jongelie fell victim to the so-called Englandspiel, he fell into the hands of the occupiers after his operation was betrayed. He eventually ended up in the Mauthausen camp.
There he belonged to the group of 40 Dutch and 7 British who were brutally murdered by the SS on September 6 and 7, 1944, after which the bodies were burned in the camp crematorium. Fellow prisoners collected the ashes in a coffin and buried them. At the place where the coffin was buried, a memorial stone was unveiled on September 7, 1965 in the presence of many relatives.
Jongelie was posthumously awarded the Bronze Cross.
