Resistance fighter born in Suriname. After the German invasion in 1940, Anton de Kom joined the communist-oriented Dutch resistance. Wrote for various magazines, until his arrest on August 7, 1944. He was imprisoned in the prison of Scheveningen (Oranjehotel), and was transferred that same month to Camp Vught. From Vught he was transported to Sachsenhausen rightly. He died on April 24, 1945 of tuberculosis in Camp Sandbostel.
Several streets, places and buildings are named after him.
