- Period:
- Second World War (1939-1945)
- Rank:
- Lieutenant
- Unit:
- F Section, Special Operations Executive (SOE), British Government
- Awarded on:
- November 15th, 1945
Recommendation:
"This officer joined the Resistance movement soon after the Armistice of 1940, and organised several groups in Northern FRANCE. He was pursued by the Gestapo, who put a heavy price on his head, and he moved to Southern FRANCE in the summer of 1942, where he worked for some months with a British organiser.
In October 1942 Lt. WORMS came to ENGLAND for training, and was parachuted back into FRANCE in January 1943 to organise Resistance in the CHALONS-sur-MARNE area. In this important region, which was thick with enemy troops and where the Gestapo were particulary active, Lt. WORMS built up ten important sabotage hroups which he armed by means of stores received from ENGLAND by parachute. He personally led several sabotage attacks on railways, notably a remarkably successful derailment in March 1943 which resulted in the death of at least 20 Germans.
Handicapped by the lack of direct W/T communication with LONDON, WORMS nevertheless did an excellent job in difficult conditions, and frequently risked his life in order to keep his organisation going.
He was arrested by the Gestapo in July 1943, and after a year in FRESNES prison was deported to GERMANY.
For his long service in Resistance, for his outstanding leadership and devotion to duty, it is recommended that he be awarded the Military Cross.
Since this citation was prepared it has been learned that he was executed at FLOSSENBERG on 29 March 1945."
Signed
Major-General
