The following wartime excerpt describes why Zapf received the Knight’s Cross…
“Knight’s Cross Holder of the Heer Fallen in Battle:
… Hauptmann Albert Zapf… has succumbed to battle injuries sustained in the Italian theatre whilst in hospital. He was awarded the Knight’s Cross for actions rendered whilst serving as an Oberleutnant and leader of a Panzergrenadier-Bataillon in the same theatre. He shrunk a British bridgehead near Cassino in a display of independent action, and during a second counterthrust he again inflicted heavy losses in dead and prisoners upon the enemy.”
