Citation:
"Sgt BIRKETT commands the Ground Defence Platoon at Bde HQ. This sub-unit was formed in mid-January and was required to carry out its role in operations before the end of March. Over this short period Sgt. BIRKETT was able to build up and train a most efficient platoon.
The high standard achieved has been due to Sgt. BIRKETT's personal zeal and untiring work. The lack of any other experienced NCOs placed on Sgt BITKETT's shoulders a task which was much more then could be expected from one man.
The efficiency of the arrangements for the defence of Bde HQ, and the numerous other duties expected of the Def P1 has been put to the test in HOLLAND during operations in March and April, and has always proved to be highly satisfactory.
Sgt BIRKETT has displayed great powers of leadership and as a senior NCO has maintained a standard, under varying and trying conditions, that has been an example to those serving udner him, and a standard in the best traditions of the Royal Marines."
