The following press article (dated 04.12.1944) describes why Rolf Mager received the Knight’s Cross…
“Hauptmann Mager, Battalion commander in a Fallschirmjäger-Regiment, halted a strong enemy armoured attack against his Battalion through his prudent and energetic intervention, and thereafter continued to hold the position against further enemy attacks. The commander and his men let the tanks roll over their foxholes and then threw back the enemy infantry which followed them. On the following night Hauptmann Mager (supported by a Sturmgeschütz Abteilung) conducted a counterattack with one of his Kompanien. He accompanied his troops as they charged into the enemy and thereafter, with the rest of his Battalion, created a new defensive front to the north of the lost village of B. under the most difficult conditions imaginable. By doing this he prevented the intended enemy breakthrough along the main road to T. For this decisive act the Führer awarded the Knight’s Cross to Hauptmann Mager.”
