On February 27, 1929, Arie was conscripted into the Royal Netherlands Navy. Here he was placed on May 1, 1929 on the guard ship Hr. Ms. Guard ship stationed at Willemsoord.
On January 15, 1934 he was transferred to the Marine Division in Rotterdam.
On December 1, 1935 he was transferred to the Corps Pontonniers & Torpedisten.
Between June 12, 1939 and the general mobilization, Arie was on long leave.
In the May days of 1940 he fought under the Corps Pontonniers & Torpedisten against the landed German Fallschirmjager in the Weizigtpark in Dordrecht. His mate Andries Bogert unfortunately perished. He took Andries to the emergency hospital, but unfortunately this was no longer of avail.
After the May days of 1940 and the capitulation, Arie went on long leave again on May 25, 1940. He also traveled to Tholen to inform Andries's wife about the loss of her husband.
During the war Arie went back to sail as skipper on his 85-ton inland vessel "Mars". It also transported illegal items from time to time. In order not to be attacked by Allied planes, they had painted the top panels of the roof in the colors red, white and blue and they could turn them over if necessary, as they were often obliged to sail with German ships in escort.
