"Major D.L.M. MACFARLANE, by reason of his wide knowledge of the Japanese language, Japanese air and military organisations, and Japanese psychology, is recognised in S.W.P.A (South West Pacific Area rd.) and overseas intelligence centres as authorative in these matters.
During the MALAYA campaign, Major MACFARLANE was a British Army Officer performing intelligence duties in MALAYA as an interpreter and laguage officer. He escaped by ship from MALAYA and reached AUSTRALIA early in 1942, when he was attached to the R.A.A.F. Intelligence Section. He was dispatched by the Commanding General, Allied Air Forces, S.W.P.A. to attend conferences in LONDON and WASHINGTON in 1944 to standardise Japanese Military terminlology, and, in February, 1945, he represented the R.A.A.F. at the Pacific Order of Battle conference at WASHINGTON. His contributions to these conferences led to his being requested by General Headquarters, WASHINGTON for attachment to PACMIR, a joint intelligence organisation newly formed in WASHINGTON, and staffed by the leading specialists drawn from all war theatres. Major MACFARLANE'S numerous intelligence memoranda have been issued by Directorate of Intlligence, Allied Air Forces, S.W.P.A. as standard publications within this theatre. Much of the material of these memoranda have been incorporated in overseas intelligence publications. During 1944, Major MACFARLANE was appointed by the Commanding Generala, Allied Air Forces, S.W.P.A. to be his adviser in Japanese psychology. Major MACFARLANE, by dint of extremely hard work and conceptration, has made a material contribution to our knowledge of the Japanese and their war machine. This has been of inestimable value to the Commanding General, Allied Air Forces, S.W.P.A. in the successful preosecution of the air war in this theatre. Because of the variety of his background Major MACFARLANE was enforced to bear for long periods a very great burden of the work of enemy appreciation in the S.W.P.A. At all times his work has been of the highest quality and his diligence and sincerity in his efforts have been an example and inspiration to those working with him."
