"Acting Leading Seaman Marmaduke Winston Spencer Churchill Snow lives up to this famous names.
During the evacuation of Tobruk he rowed an officer ashore in order to try to obtain further orders. Although the harbour was completely surrounded and there was heavy fire from the enemy's rifles, machine guns, tank guns and field guns he was still awaiting the officer's return when the last of the parties prepared to leave the beach.
They urged Snow to go with them but he replied that he had received instructions to await the officer's return and that he intend to do so.
That was the last his shipmates saw of Harmaduke Winston Spencer Churchill Snow.
To-day's London Gazette announces that he has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and the citation states:
"His selfless devotion to duty cost Snow his freedom, if not his life, as both he and his officer are missing from the operation."
