Biography

Johannes served as a soldier in the section of the Bijzonderen Vrijwilligen Landstorm Oostvoorne (14 R.I.)

During the war Johannes Groeneveld had hidden a radio at home. He regularly listened to the Dutch news from England and then told about it to Cornelis Langendoen, with whom the Dutch SS officer Gerrit van Noort was in hiding, who had deserted. When the deserter was arrested, he betrayed Groeneveld and the others. Johannes lived at No. 9 Lodderlandsedijk and was not at home when the Germans came to pick him up. He was already in hiding by then. However, when he heard that the Germans had been to his home and that they had taken his father in his place, he decided to report to the Germans of his own accord.
On the same day, December 5, 1944, several other persons were arrested for questioning and taken to Brielle. De Waal and the Van der Zee's (father and two sons from Zwartewaal) were removed from the group with Johannes Groeneveld and Cornelis Langendoen. The others were told that these six people would be shot. They themselves were allowed to go home. On the same day, the houses of Cornelis Langendoen and Johannes Groeneveld were set on fire.

He was executed together with 5 others (C. Langendoen, W. de Waal, J. van der Zee, W. van der Zee and H. van der Zee) in the dunes of Rockanje on December 6, 1944. On December 21, 1944, at the same location also J. Hoogvliet and H. Hoogvliet were executed and buried.

After the war, people from Rockanje were buried at the Maria Rust cemetery. The monument was unveiled here on 6 December 1946.

After the war, Inselkommandant E.E. Schermuly was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his disenfranchisement.

His name is also mentioned on the Memorial Fusillade 6 December 1944 .
