ATET NANRA PASS, MAYU PENINSULA, BURMA - 28th March 1943

"At ATET NANRA PASS, MAYU PENINSULA, BURMA. at about 1030 hours on the 28th of March 1943, Capt. C.S. SMALLEY, R.A.M.C., 1/c of the Section of "B" Company, 6 Field Ambulance (British), whilst accompanying "C" Company, 1/R. Berks in the ATET NANRA PASS, was caught in an ambush and in the ensuing engagement showed great efficiency and bravery under fire. The following account is by the Commander of the R.Berks Company, in question, Capt. FORSTER.

"When Pte. *** was injured Capt. SMALLEY went forward to him under considerable automatic fire from the enemy. As far as he knew at that time, he was covered by 2 rifles only, i.e., my batman and myself. He organized the carrying back of my two stretcher cases while still under fire and behaved the whole time as if he were on morning sick parade."

I have no hesitation in recommending Capt. C.S.SMALLEY, for the Military Cross."
