"Major NICHOLSON has been the SIgnal Security Officer at this HQ since it arrived in N. Africa. He has been solely responsible, during the whole campaign in ITALY for all measures to defeat the enemy from obtaining any information from our communications links.

This task has necessitated many hours of unremitting toil on detailed work of great complexity. To this Major NICHOLSON has brought a very high standard of professional skill, and exceptional devotion to duty, which has resulted in a very high standard of SIgnal Security precautions.

His efficiency, zeal and his achievements in this respect have been quite outstanding, and have very materially contributed to the success of the Allied Armies in the campaign in ITALY."

"Major Edward Nicholson rendered exceptionally meritorious service as Signal Security Officer, Signal Section, Allied Force Headquarters, from September 1942 to December 1945. He prepared an adaptation of the Link and Code Signal Procedures for the use of the United States Army and played a prominent part in the integration and synthesis of American and British signal procedures and policies. Major Nicholson's work in this field was outstanding and a valuable contribution to the combined war effort."
