"Has distinguished himself by performing exceptionally courageous and tactful actions in the battle against the enemy by, after having reported entirely voluntarily in 1942 for assignment to a British so-called "Commando" or other unit:
1st. on 17 September 1944, assigned to the 1st British Airborne Division, after having landed from the air near Wolfheze, for several days in succession, always under heavy enemy fire, to take part in the battles in the front line near Wolfheze until, as a result of their own heavy losses and the enemy's actions, the British troops near Oosterbeek had to withdraw across the Rhine to Nijmegen, which place was reached on 26 September 1944.
2nd. on 1 November 1944, assigned to No. 47 Royal Marine Commando, to land under heavy enemy fire near Westkapelle and on 3 November that same day to take part in the storming the last enemy strongholds near Zoutelande, during which he was wounded when enemy mortar shells fell in the midst of his group."
